As the season has gone on for the Calgary Flames, most hockey writers and fans have been impressed with their success; but I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. It just has NOT happened yet! Well, here we are, 22 games in, and the Calgary Flames are NOT just playing hockey well, they are pushing my team, Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Cancuks atop the Pacific Division. I believe that it is time to take the Calgary Flames seriously. The Calgary Flames are beating good teams, they are beating the teams they should beat, and they are doing it the right way.
The Calgary Flames this year is a very solid team, with the highest scoring defense in the NHL. Dennis Wideman has eight goals and Matt Giordano has six goals. There are other defense corps that do NOT have five goals amongst them. The young guys up front like Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau keep getting better and better, Jonas Hiller has been great in net and no matter how long we keep waiting for this team to crack they just do NOT seem to give me the satisfaction.
Just recently, the Calgary Flames’ comeback win against the Devils is a case in point. That was a game in which the Calgary Flames trailed by two goals multiple times and could have folded the tents, but the Calgary Flames kept battling confidently and got the two points. I keep waiting for the Calgary Flames to fall apart, but 22 games is a pretty long stretch to hide a bad team. I think that I’m past the point where I can consider this a bad team on a hot streak. The Calgary Flames , in my opinion, are a real playoff contender. Maybe they will struggle and fall out before the season end, but I do NOT see a reason to think that the Calgary Flames are going to collapse any time soon.
